Meet Harry and Bess Truman

William and Sue Wills will be celebrating 15 years of touring with “Presidents and Their First Ladies, dramatically speaking” with their presentation on the lives of Harry and Bess Truman on April 29, 2011 at 11 a.m. This presentation and the luncheon following it are sponsored by the Friends of the Washington Twp. Public Library.

This is one of the great love stories in Presidential history, as from the age of six Harry loved only one person - Bess. Harry's string of early business failures certainly could not have foretold his rise to the Presidency. In the background working as a loving partner all along the way was "The Boss", Bess.

Humor, rocky times, human frailties, and enduring affection combine to make this an endearing tale. Truman was the President who had to make the momentous decision of dropping the first atomic bomb, a decision that hastened the end of World War II. This was one of many major decisions that, guided by the motto “The Buck Stops Here”, Truman made and got things done.

An Evening with Benedict Arnold…Warrior, Hero, Spy…Traitor”

An Evening with Benedict Arnold…Warrior, Hero, Spy…Traitor” on Monday, April 18, 2011 at 7:00 p.m. at the Washington Twp. Public Library, 37 E. Springtown Rd, Long Valley, NJ.

Forrest “Woody” Burgener, Schooleys Mountain resident and Military Historian, will trace General Arnold’s “unbelievable” military career from the capture of Fort Ticonderoga in 1775 to Arnold’s shocking “High Treason” at West Point on September 21, 1780. The “tangled triumvirate” of Arnold, British Major John Andre and Arnold’s “child bride” Margaret “Peggy” Shippen will be examined in depth, and perhaps…slightly “untangled”. The “Deed Most Foul” at West Point which culminated with Arnold’s desperate escape down the Hudson River (just ahead of a furious Alexander Hamilton) to British-held New York City…as “Spy Master” Andre was captured by “cowboys”, tried by military tribunal, convicted of spying and then hanged just seven days later. Arnold completed his escape, went on to fight for the British, and again…never lost a battle! What a story! Intrigue, Romance, Betrayal..perhaps the Nation’s first “Soap Opera”…with very deadly consequences…

Mr. Burgener is a graduate of New York University and holds BA and MBA degrees. He is an officer of “Company of Military Historians (West Point Chapter)”, a member of the Washington Township, NJ Historical Society, the Rockland Chapter, NY, Historical Society, “Adjutant” of the American Veterans Association, Post 1776, Washington Township, and “Life” member of the 51st Fighter-Interceptor Wing Association and Vietnam Veterans Assoc. (NYS council). He served in the US Air Force from 1966-1970. He also “historically restored” the “Shippen Manor (circa 1752) in Oxford, NJ and, among others, the “Wetherill Plantation (circa 1740) in Jamesburg, NJ.

Find out What Is The Baseball Talmud?

Find out What Is The Baseball Talmud? On Wednesday, April 13, 2011 at 7:00 p.m at the Washington Twp. Public Library, 37 E. Springtown Rd, Long Valley, NJ.

The Baseball Talmud by Howard Megdal reveals that there is far more to Jewish baseball than Hank Greenberg's powerful slugging and Sandy Koufax's masterful control. From Ausmus to Zinn, Berg to Kinsler, Holtzman to Yeager, and many others, Megdal draws upon the lore and the little-known details that increase our enjoyment of the game, including:

• Which Jewish player spent a portion of his retirement as a spy

• Who received $50,000 and a car to quit school and join the Major Leagues

• How many players sat out of games scheduled on Yom Kippur

• Which famous player chose baseball over becoming a rabbi

But this is more than just stories. Megdal, a stat geek himself, uses the wealth of modern saber metrics to determine the greatest Jewish players at each position, the all-time Jewish All-Star Team, and how they would rate against the greatest teams in baseball history, from the 1906 Chicago Cubs to the 1998 New York Yankees.

Howard Megdal is the Editor-in-Chief of The Perpetual Post. He covers baseball and basketball for SNY.tv, MLBTradeRumors.com, New York Baseball Digest and has written for ESPN.com as well as numerous other publications. His book about Jewish baseball players, "The Baseball Talmud," is available for purchase on Amazon.com and wherever books are sold. Howard co-hosts the radio program New York Baseball Digest with Mike Silva; Podcasts are available on iTunes. He has been a guest on a number of radio stations, including WFAN and WVOX. Howard's daily haiku recapping each Mets game can be read on AmazinAvenue.com.

Take a Tour of Baseball Parks and American Landscapes

Take a Tour of Baseball Parks and American Landscapes on Monday, April 11, 2011 at 7:00 p.m. at the Washington Twp. Public Library, 37 E. Springtown Rd., Long Valley, NJ.

Why do people have such strong feelings about the places where they have played and watched baseball - places that range from city streets to rural lots, from Little League Fields to multi-million dollar stadiums? Why is the baseball park such an important part of cities and towns across America? Part of the answer lies in the way baseball is embedded in American culture and history, and part lies in the way people become emotionally attached to the landscapes and cityscapes they share with their families and friends. Dr. Stanton Green's photographic tour of baseball parks examines the complex relationship between baseball as a key aspect of American culture and the places and landscapes in which it is played.

The program is funded by the New Jersey Council for the Humanities,
a state partner of the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Bach 2 Rock Concert

Bach 2 Rock Concert

BACH 2 ROCK concert Saturday, April 2, 2011 at 1 p.m. at the Washington Twp. Public Library, 37 E. Springtown Rd., Long Valley, NJ

This program presents the simplicity of the solo acoustic violin and its origins demonstrated by performing a simple Bach minuet. Whisked into present day, Caryn Lin uses the five string electric violin, sound effects, her voice, & percussion instruments to transcend that "solo" sound by doing what is called "looping." She creates sound loops live that are added to and embellished, playing in essence live duos, trios, and more, with herself. Bruce, her sound technician, demonstrates and loops electronic drums and electric guitar. This three dimensional sound magic is performed right before your eyes through a full professional sound system. Audiences of ALL ages are captivated. A (Fun) large screen power point presentation accents the show. Caryn also tells two anti-bullying, inspirational, motivational stories.

Ms. Lin is a one-woman musical dynamo whose violin virtuosity, says one presenter, "is what Bela Fleck is to the banjo, Miles Davis is to the trumpet, Zappa is to guitar, and Coltrane to sax." With her five-string electric violin, singing, sound effects, and help from the audience and a multi-talented sound engineer, Caryn transforms solo sound into a mind-boggling experience that's as educational as it is entertaining. Throughout her performance, she shares inspirational stories of her life and struggles as an artist.

A classically trained violinist and exciting musical innovator, Caryn Lin began playing the violin at nine. Her formal training includes studying with Philadelphia Orchestra member Larry Grika until the age of 18, followed by a degree in violin performance from Northwestern University, then more studies with violin virtuoso Susanne Lautenbacher in Germany. Caryn plays a five-string electric violin that is augmented by a live-recorded mix of her playing, voice, other instruments, and sounds.

“I’m going to show you lots of fun things you can do with sound, technology and the violin,” Lin says. She interspersed her musical performance with explanations of the history of the violin and the evolution of electronic music, demonstrating not only the violin, but also electronic sound effects using pedals, stomp boxes and digital looping.

About the book: Cassia has always trusted the Society to make the right choices for her: what to read, what to watch, what to believe. So when Xander's face appears on-screen at her Matching ceremony, Cassia knows with complete certainty that he is her ideal mate . . . until she sees Ky Markham's face flash for an instant before the screen fades to black.

The Society tells her it's a glitch, a rare malfunction, and that she should focus on the happy life she's destined to lead with Xander. But Cassia can't stop thinking about Ky, and as they slowly fall in love, Cassia begins to doubt the Society's infallibility and is faced with an impossible choice: between Xander and Ky, between the only life she's known and a path that no one else has dared to follow.
