Techniques in Watercolor Pencil Painting Class for Adults to be held at the Washington Twp Public Library


The Washington Twp. Public Library, 37 E. Springtown Rd., Long Valley, NJ is please to present a Watercolor Pencil Painting Class for adults entitled “Techniques in Watercolor Pencil Painting” on Wednesday, September 21, 2011 at 7 p.m.

Did you ever wonder how a watercolor painting could be created without using watercolor tube paints? Using watercolor pencils you can achieve the same effect! Learn how to paint this way and get wonderful results with Doris Schwint, artist. This step-by-step class will show you the basics, and you will complete a painting.

Space is limited to the first 20 registrants so registration is required.

 Doris Schwint is an artist who paints in water color, pastel, and pen & ink.  She  enjoys painting in a free flowing style in her water colors and uses glowing pastels in landscapes, florals, seascapes and figures. Her favorite subjects are local landscapes, Maine seascapes, and gardens.  Doris began her art career studying at Parson’s School of Design, NYC. She worked as an illustrator in New York and New Jersey; has exhibited widely and won many awards.

Fall Gardens Presentation at the Washington Twp. Public Library

The Washington Twp. Public Library, 37 E. Springtown Rd, .Long Valley, NJ will present Fall Gardens on Wednesday, September 14, 2011 at 7 p.m.
Marc Zukovich of Sterling Horticultural Services will talk how the last of the fall fruits and flowers, plants with interesting bark and garden architecture can be used to make a garden a showplace 365 days out of the year.  There will be plenty of time for questions, so bring gardening inquiries.
Marc holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Botany from Drew University and certificates from Harvard Graduate School of Design and the New York Botanical Garden. Before founding Sterling Horticultural Services, Marc was a District Manager for Brickman Industries. Prior to that, he managed a 38-acre private estate in Alpine, NJ. Since 1990, Marc has managed the grounds of Honeywell Inc.’s World Headquarters, formerly AlliedSignal, in Morristown.

Marc also teaches classes in horticulture as an adjunct professor at County College of Morris, where he was recognized with the NISOD national award for teaching excellence. He frequently lectures for adult schools and community groups throughout New Jersey.

9/11 Documentary to be Shown at the Washington Twp. Public Library

To commentate the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks , the Washington Twp. Public Library, 37 E. Springtown Rd., Long Valley, NJ plans to show the documentary “9/12 from chaos to community” on Friday, September 9, 2011 at 3 p.m. and Monday, September 12, 2011 at 7 p.m. In the wake of the September 11 attacks, New Yorkers from all walks of life felt compelled to overcome their sense of powerlessness by volunteering to help out in the recovery effort. They brought in supplies, set up relief stations, and for ten months fed and cared for the recovery workers. Many deep and unexpected — even unlikely — relationships developed out of thi
Using cinema verite footage, interviews and archival photographs, several characters are follow through a series of events reuniting them with each other after the closing of the site. Through their stories we present a portrait of the city within a city that was Ground Zero, and examine how an extremely diverse group of people transcended politics and culture in an effort to heal their city and themselves.

Lunch n Learn on Pre-Diabetes at the Washington Twp. Public Library

~Lunch N’ Learn~ at the Washington Twp. Public Library, 37 E. Springtown Rd., Long Valley, NJ on “Pre-Diabetes” with Christine Meissner, MS, RD, CNSD from Hackettstown Regional Medical Center on Monday, August 22, 2011 starting at noon.

1.9 million new cases of diabetes are diagnosed in people aged 20 years and older in 2010. Pre-diabetes, Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes, Gestational Diabetes and hypoglycemia can be controlled with the help of RDs.

By evaluating food intake, medications and lab results, the RD can help develop a lifestyle plan with the goal of maintaining glucose levels in a healthy range. Come and learn more about how to prevent this disease.

August Photography Display at the Washington Twp. Public Library

Michael Goodwin was born in London, England and moved to America with his family in the early 1990s. Michael’s artistic talent was discovered at an early age, but he didn’t pursue photography till moving to Long Valley. His love of the outdoors and gardening has provided ample opportunity to build his photography skills.

The photos in the Library exhibit are sampling of the portfolio of work Michael has created. The photos are limited editions and available in various sizes. All the photos are available mounted and unframed or mounted with a handmade picture frame.

Washington Twp. Public Library's Summer Reading Club Finale

The Washington Twp. Public Library 37 E. Springtown Rd., Long Valley, NJ, will be having its Summer Reading Club Finale on Saturday, August 13, 2011 from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. The raindate will be Sunday, August 14th

The Finale will feature one of the last performances by the family ensemble, Dugan’s Holligans

Dugan Hooligans is a Celtic eclectic ensemble is led by 2 award-winning teenagers playing mainly Irish/Scottish folk, blending into bluegrass, Canadian, Eastern European, and even klezmer in exciting, technically mind-blowing and entirely disarming fashion. Dugan’s Hooligans is a family ensemble showcasing two teenagers: Connor, 19, and Sharlys, 17. Connor is a two-time North Atlantic Irish fiddle champion and currently holds championship titles in Bluegrass and Old Time. He is a violin performance major at Montclair State University and has played with the Baroque Orchestra of New Jersey, the New Philharmonic of NJ, the Livingston Symphony, and the NJ Concert Opera Orchestra.

Sharlys is a three-time Irish harp champion. She plays the penny whistle, dances, and sings in English, Gaelic, and French. She has also played as a guest artist with the Baroque Orchestra of New Jersey.

Nancy, their mom, plays the harp and keyboards, and George, their dad, is the percussionist/bodhran player.

Connor's off to Berklee College of Music in Boston in September and Sharlys is finishing one more year of high school, then it's off to college for her.

The Finale will also have games and a Moonwalk for the younger set starting at 1 p.m. and ending around 2 p.m. in time for the concert.

From 2:30 to 3:30, young people can get their caricature drawn by artist Gina Minichino!

SPACE IS LIMITED for the caricatures so sign up early starting 8/6 for grades 6-12 only and 8/10 for other ages.

Finally, the Hotbox Truck, a local mobile gourmet, will be onsite with food available to  purchase.
