Baseball Talmud
Find out What Is The Baseball Talmud? On Wednesday, November 9, 2011 at 7:00 p.m at the Washington Twp. Public Library, 37 E. Springtown Rd, Long Valley, NJ.
The Baseball Talmud by Howard Megdal reveals that there is far more to Jewish baseball than Hank Greenberg's powerful slugging and Sandy Koufax's masterful control. From Ausmus to Zinn, Berg to Kinsler, Holtzman to Yeager, and many others, Megdal draws upon the lore and the little-known details that increase our enjoyment of the game, including:
• Which Jewish player spent a portion of his retirement as a spy
• Who received $50,000 and a car to quit school and join the Major Leagues
• How many players sat out of games scheduled on Yom Kippur
• Which famous player chose baseball over becoming a rabbi
But this is more than just stories. Megdal, a stat geek himself, uses the wealth of modern saber metrics to determine the greatest Jewish players at each position, the all-time Jewish All-Star Team, and how they would rate against the greatest teams in baseball history, from the 1906 Chicago Cubs to the 1998 New York Yankees.
Howard Megdal is the Editor-in-Chief of The Perpetual Post. He covers baseball and basketball for SNY.tv, MLBTradeRumors.com, New York Baseball Digest and has written for ESPN.com as well as numerous other publications. His book about Jewish baseball players, "The Baseball Talmud," is available for purchase on Amazon.com and wherever books are sold. Howard co-hosts the radio program New York Baseball Digest with Mike Silva; Podcasts are available on iTunes. He has been a guest on a number of radio stations, including WFAN and WVOX. Howard's daily haiku recapping each Mets game can be read on AmazinAvenue.com.

Bullying Prevention Forum:How to Handle and Prevent Bullying in Schools and Workplaces
School bullying is not what it used to be.
The new Students’ Anti-Bullying Bill of Rights, signed into law in New Jersey in January, 2011, has been described as the toughest state law about school bullying in the nation. What does this law mean for students, parents, and schools? This program will cover the basics of bullying: what it is, why it is so harmful, what parents can do about it, what teenagers need to know, and what the new law means for all of us. The kind of bullying that goes on in schools today is not like the playground bullying most parents remember from their own school days. Many parents, remembering their own school days, tell their sons and daughters to ignore bullying, to toughen up, or to use humor. These strategies might not work today, especially in the case of cyber bullying. Bullying today is very serious; in some schools in the United States, school bullying has led to school shootings and suicides, and many more students across the country are afraid to go to school or have trouble concentrating in class because they are afraid. Come find out what you can do to help your school prevent bullying, what your child’s school should be doing, and what to do to help your son or daughter if bullying is happening.
Bio: Dr. Paula C. RodrÃguez Rust is an East Brunswick resident and owner of Spectrum Diversity LLC, providing professional development and consulting services to schools and community groups throughout New Jersey. She specializes in the prevention of bullying and prejudice, and has been a diversity educator since 1987. She is a member of the American Sociological Association, the Society for the Study of Social Problems, and has served on harassment grievance boards and on the New Jersey Special Task Force on Bullying and Cyberbullying Awareness and Prevention. Dr. Rodriguez Rust has appeared as an expert on the newsmagazine 20/20, and has been quoted in numerous magazines and newspapers, including Newsweek.
Please register online at www.wtpl.org
Professional development certificates will be available for educators who contact Dr. Rust at DrPaula@spectrumdiversity.org to give her their name and school affiliation and request a certificate prior to the date of the workshop.
